The Report: Wigan Athletic 0 Blues 0

Ten-man Blues made it eight straight games without defeat following a battling goalless draw at the DW Stadium.

Despite the solid point, Blues were left wondering what could have been after failing to capitalise on first-half dominance.

The flash point came in the 62nd minute when Jesse Lingard was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Wigan sub Jordi Gomez, an incident that sparked a brief melee between both sets of players.

Lee Clark had made one change to the XI that drew with Nottingham Forest before Christmas with Lee Novak replacing Andy Shinnie.

It had been a positive first-half performance from Blues and it would have been no great surprise if they held a lead at the interval. However, despite plenty of pressure and possession, Blues were just lacking that clinical edge and never fully tested Ali Al Habsi. The visitors' best chance came in the seventh minute when Chris Burke's excellent delivery from the right found the outstretched boot of Novak only for the effort to go inches wide of the left post.

At the other end, Darren Randolph did have to be alert to brilliantly divert clear Callum McManaman's goal-bound effort from distance in the 43rd minute.

The second-half started in the same vein as the first but as soon as Lingard was handed an early bath, it was backs-to-the-wall time for Blues.

For the final half-an-hour, the Blues backline comfortably withstood wave after wave of Wigan attacks. However, that said, Uwe Rosler's men also lacked a cutting edge and never truly tested Randolph.
