Blues were unable to halt Cardiff City’s 100% home recorded courtesy of Mark Hudson’s 57th minute winner.
Leroy Lita equalised in the second-half after Cardiff took the lead through Craig Bellamy, then Hudson left Blues empty-handed by tucking away a corner.
Bar wayward shots from Jonathan Spector and Aron Gunnarsson, there was little action to speak of amidst the early exchanges.
But on 16 minutes Lita leaped to meet Wade Elliott’s free-kick – forcing Ben Marshall into a quick save – then three minutes later the ball bobbled at just the wrong time, resulting in Lita to fire over after a promising counter attack.
As the rain started lashing down in South Wales the encounter suffered somewhat, although Chris Burke managed to ghost in from the right and almost find the top corner with a curling attempt.
Unfortunately for the visitors Cardiff seized the initiative in the form of Bellamy six minutes before half-time.
Peter Whittingham pinged a ball in behind Blues’ back line to find Heidar Helguson, who played in Bellamy for the simplest of finishes with Jack Butland’s best efforts in vain.
If it wasn’t for Gunnarsson heading over Craig Noone’s cross from underneath Butland’s bar, then the Bluebirds would have virtually been out of sight the other side of the break.
Lita made the hosts pay though, by supplying a deft touch to help Elliott’s free-kick past Marshall into the bottom corner.
As soon as Blues were level Malky MacKay’s charges edged ahead again thanks to Hudson smashing home Peter Whittingham's corner from close range.
Butland was then called into action halfway through the second period, saving Joe Mason’s goalbound strike with his foot. Birmingham also had to survive a penalty shout in the lead up to the chance, as Bellamy went tumbling in the box.
Clark introduced Nathan Redmond and Marlon King to try and salvage a point, but the closest they came was King’s snapshot straight at Marshall.
Spector went down in the area under pressure from Kevin McNaughton late on, but half-hearted appeals were ignored.
Blues have an opportunity to swiftly bounce back when they invite Huddersfield Town to St. Andrew’s this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
