Blackpool 1 Blues 1

A Curtis Davies second-half header ensured his side left Bloomfield Road with a useful point.

Blues fell behind to Tom Ince’s first-half drive and it was the Seasiders who looked primed to score the second of the evening.

But Birmingham weathered the storm through until half-time – and levelled via Davies’ head shortly after the break.

Neither side were willing to take any risks on an uneven playing surface – resulting in a dull start on the coast.

But Blackpool seized the initiative with the very first chance of the contest, when Ince fired past Jack Butland from 20-yards on 16 minutes.

Kirk Broadfoot’s driven cross found Kevin Phillips who volleyed against Davies, but the ball found the lethal Ince.

Lee Clark’s men went straight up the other end and thought they won a penalty, only for the referee to ignore Marlon King’s claims of being hauled down by Alex Baptiste.

And the Tangerines would have doubled their lead on 23 minutes if it wasn’t for Butland acrobatically tipping over Nathan Delfouneso’s effort.

More anxious moments were to follow for Blues, as Ince’s deflected shot hit the bar and was tapped in by Phillips. However, the former Blues marksman was ruled offside, much to the visitors’ relief.

The man in the middle then turned down a second penalty shout, after Broadfoot fell over Paul Robinson’s outstretched leg in the 34th minute.

It was all change after the interval, though, as Davies bundled home Wade Elliott’s in-swinging corner, which caused no end of havoc in the Blackpool box.

Some last-ditch defending from Pablo Ibanez kept the scores level, as the Spaniard diverted Tiago Gomes’ cross onto the outside of the post.

Blues nearly took the lead in Lancashire moments prior to the hour mark, but the woodwork prevented Peter Lovenkrands from featuring on the scoresheet.

The former Rangers man pounced on some careless Blackpool defending, then with just Matt Gilks to beat; Lovenkrands rattled the underside of the bar.

Ince also went close to a winning the match on 74 minutes with a thunderbolt that just snuck over Butland’s bar.

An influx of substitutes, including debutant Papa Bouba Diop, and an extremely bobbly pitch, meant a winner wasn’t forthcoming late on.
