Report: Hull City 2 Blues 0
Blues fell to their first league away defeat of the season at the KC Stadium.
Two first-half goals in the space of two minutes from David Meyler and Abel Hernandez ended Blues’ run of four straight wins.
Gary Rowett made one change from Tuesday’s win at Bolton Wanderers with Jonathan Spector starting in the place of Andrew Shinnie, who dropped to the bench.
Blues got off to a bright start with Jacques Maghoma twice going close. The midfielder got on the left shoulder of Andy Robertson, whilst chasing a long ball, but Allan McGregor did well to rush out and clear.
And minutes later Paul Caddis’ cross from the right deflected into his path, but his first time low effort was excellently saved by McGregor’s legs.
Hull grew into the game and had two good chances of their own. Sam Clucas’ header found Chuba Akpom in a central position but his header was straight at Tomasz Kuszczak.
Kuszczak was then called into action minutes later through Clucas’ volley, but the Pole did excellently to parry clear with his right hand from close range.
Blues thought they’d weathered Hull’s pressure, but the hosts broke the deadlock through Meyler on 36 minutes.
Ahmed Elmohamady’s roll back from the right of the area found Meyler on the edge of area and the midfielder stuck it low just inside the post.
With Blues trying to find their feet, Hull struck again. Robertson drove down the left and beat two men, before finding Hernandez in the area. The striker with his back to goal turned inside and slotted in from close range.
Hull continued to press and it could have been three late in the half. Elmohamady’s cross needed just a finish in the six-yard box, but Hernandez and Akpom both got in each others way and neither was able to make a full connection.
David Cotterill and Andy Shinnie replaced Demarai Gray and Jonathan Spector at half-time, but although Blues started brightly second-half they were unable to get the breakthrough they needed when on top.
Shinnie was unable to get a shot away at the edge of the area and a Cotterill corner fell perfectly for Jonathan Grounds eight-yards out, but the defender's volley was blocked behind.
Hull reacted after the hour with Hernandez booked for using his arm to try to finish Odubajo’s cross and Kuszczak saving low from Akpom who’d drilled an effort from left.
Blues kept trying to claw one back and replaced an injured Paul Robinson with Jon Toral, but Hull were able to see the game out.
