Report: Rotherham United 0 Blues 0
Blues were held to goalless draw by nine-man Rotherham United at The New York Stadium.
After a quiet first-half, Gary Rowett’s side dominated possession and created chances in the second.
Blues threw everything at Rotherham, who had Richard Wood and Joe Mattock sent-off for two bookable offences, but they were unable to get that elusive goal in front of the travelling 2,614 Blues fans.
Gary Rowett made one change to last Saturday’s defeat to Sheffield Wednesday by replacing Paul Caddis with Ryan Shotton who was making his debut for the club.
The first-half started frantically. with neither side holding onto the ball and showing composure.
Michael Morrison did well to read Kirk Broadfoot’s cross and cleared, whilst Jonathan Grounds’ chipped diagonal bounced just behind Jon Toral.
Blues’ first chance of the half came after 14 minutes. Jacques Maghoma dropped his shoulder and dragged a shot from a central position, which Donaldson who was stretching nearly prodded home.
Blues continued to press and despite Paul Robinson going down carried on.
Maghoma got past his defender, hit the byline and Toral who was under pressure from Lee Camp prodded just wide.
Blues were unable to act on their period of dominance and Rotherham came into the game.
Kirk Broadfoot’s free header across the six-yard box just evaded Paul Green, whilst Tomasz Kuszczak made a good save at his near post from Matt Derbyshire.
Blues rode the pressure and they came out much stronger in the second-half.
Jonathan Grounds played in Maghoma down the left, but instead of shooting he was crowded out trying to cut inside.
Blues were throwing plenty of crosses into the area, but they couldn’t create that clear opportunity in the final third.
Rotherham countered just after the hour mark and Ryan Shotton did excellently to come across and stop Derbyshire from scoring at the near post.
The game opened up and Blues had a great chance to take the lead.
Toral’s gorgeous reverse pass released Clayton Donaldson into the area and Camp made an excellent fingertip save to his right.
Danny Ward headed wide for Rotherham, but Blues continued to press.
Wood just glanced a header away from Donaldson in the area, before Maghoma was denied for Blues’ best chance.
Toral slid Maghoma through into the left channel, but Camp raced out, closed down the angle and saved low.
Both managers made changes, but Rotherham went down to 10 men with just 11 minutes to go.
Wood had been booked for a late foul on Donaldson early in the second-half and after being beaten to the ball by the striker, the defender was instantly given a second yellow card.
Blues pressed, but were unable to create a clear opportunity with Rotherham holding on.
And with seconds left they were down to nine. Mattock, who was booked in the first-half for a late tackle was booked again for time wasting during a throwing.
