Report: Newcastle United 4 Blues 0
It was a day to forget for Gary Rowett's side as they were humbled 4-0 at St. James' Park
A Dwight Gayle hat-trick and a Yoan Gouffran goal just after the break ensured Blues would leave the North-East empty handed.
Newcastle nullified Blues for the majority of the opening 45 minutes as Dwight Gayle's brace in the space of six minutes made Blues' task much harder than it already was.
The hosts started on the front foot and brought Tomasz Kuszczak into action early on. The Pole making two smart stops in quick succession from Matt Ritchie and Ciaran Clark.
Newcastle's dominance was rewarded in the 18th minute when Gayle headed home Mohamed Diame's cross after the latter made a surging run down the right-hand side.
Six minutes later and Gayle struck again, this time sweeping home Isaac Hayden's low cross from close range.
The best it got for Blues was when Greg Stewart had an intricate run on the edge of the area but he was denied before he could get a shot away; Donaldson almost had a sight of goal, but an important interception from Clark denied the striker who would have been bearing down on Karl Darlow's goal.
Kuszczak was again in action making stops from Ritchie and Diame as half-time beckoned.
The second-half couldn't have started any worse as Yoan Gouffran made it 3-0 just two minutes after the restart to effectively put the game beyond Rowett's side.
Gayle was denied a third by a brilliant save from Kuszczak just after the hour. However, unfortunately for Blues, Gayle wasn't to be denied twelve minutes later when he slotted home to make it four and complete his hat-trick.
Prior to Gayle's third, minutes before, Blues mustered a couple of chances themselves.
Half-time substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz couldn't keep his header down after Josh Dacres-Cogley whipped in an inviting cross.
Then debutant Corey O'Keeffe, who had been on the pitches a matter of minutes, had Blues best chance. After a powerful effort from Che Adams, Darlow parried the ball into the youngster's path, but he couldn't find the target as he headed wide.
A disappointing day for Blues in a match where they never got going.
