Huddersfield Town 1 Blues 1

Blues were denied victory at the John Smith’s Stadium by Adam Hammill’s 93rd minute equaliser for Huddersfield Town.

The visitors had defended stoutly in the second-half to hold on to their lead, after Callum Reilly had moved them ahead with his first goal in senior football during first-half stoppage time.

But late Huddersfield pressure told when Hammill curled the ball past Jack Butland into the top corner.

It has to be said neither side looked like scoring in the opening stages of the encounter, with the first real chance not arriving until the 23rd minute.

Former Blues midfielder Neil Danns found Sean Scannell with a lofted cross, and the Irishman’s spectacular volley was met with a fabulous Butland save.

The visitors then survived Adam Clayton’s blocked shot from a goalmouth scramble, followed by Jermaine Beckford heading Danns’ cross straight at Butland from point-blank range.

Out of nowhere Lee Clark’s men dominated the closing stages of the first 45 minutes, creating a number of opportunities.

Curtis Davies was the first to try his luck when an ambitious overhead kick was mightily close to finding the back of the net. Three minutes later and Chris Burke’s effort fizzed tantalisingly across the face of goal.

But Blues’ pressure paid off in stoppage time thanks to Reilly’s mature finish from close range. The Terriers defence failed to deal with Burke’s cross and Reilly took advantage by placing the ball into the bottom corner with his left peg.

The 19-year-old made, who was struggling with a virus, made way for Jonathan Spector at half-time, however this didn’t seem to unsettle Birmingham’s midfield.

In fact it was Blues, rather than Huddersfield, who almost scored the next goal, when the efficient Morgaro Gomis wrong-footed Town ‘keeper Alex Smithies with a deflected 20-yard strike that just slid wide.

Birmingham could have also wrapped up the game prior to Beckford’s chance, but Smithies was on hand to block Nathan Redmond’s goal-bound shot with his legs.

At the opposite end Butland produced a brilliant reaction save to keep out Lee’s flicked attempt on 89 minutes, but the England international could do little to stop Hammill’s curled strike from flying in to break Blues hearts.
