The Report: Blues 0 Charlton 1

A disappointing afternoon of football culminated in Blues losing to a solitary Charlton Athletic goal at St. Andrew’s.

Dale Stephens found the back of the net for the visitors just into the second-half.

In fairness neither team really got going in what was generally an uninspiring performance from both sides.

There were four changes to the team that performed so bravely against Stoke City earlier in the week.

Darren Randolph, Chris Burke, Kyle Bartley and Demarai Gray were all in the starting XI, in place of Colin Doyle, Mitch Hancox, Wade Elliott and Shane Ferguson.

Charlton began the game at a canter and with just over a minute gone came close to taking the lead through Johnnie Jackson, but Darren Randolph blocked his goal-bound header with his face.

Having survived that early scare Blues began to take control of the game.

With a quarter of an hour played Dan Burn headed the ball into the back of the net from Chris Burke’s cross, but the referee denied the goal after penalising Lee Novak for a foul on the Charlton goalkeeper Ben Hamer.

As the match progressed Charlton began to pose more of an attacking threat, without fashioning any real clear-cut opportunities.

The best three chances came in the last five minutes of the first half. Randolph was forced to race out to the edge of his box to tackle Jackson, before Dale Stephens mishit his shot and it found its way into Randolph’s hand. Then at the other end Hamer was forced to save from Novak.

Swirling wind and rain made the conditions difficult for both sets of players when they returned after the break.

With 56 minutes gone, Blues found themselves a goal behind.

Randolph initially produced a great double save, but he was unable to push the ball far enough away from the danger zone, and Dale Stephens was left with the simple task of firing the ball into the back of an empty net from close-range.

Blues were almost back in it minutes later when Tom Adeyemi burst through and sent the ball past the advancing Charlton keeper, but an Addicks defender was able to scoop the ball away.

Just after the hour mark Lee Clark made a double substitution when he sent on Shane Ferguson and Peter Lovenkrands for Lee Novak and Demarai Gray.

The double change didn’t really make any impact and Blues were finding it difficult to get back into the contest.

With 90 minutes on the clock Lovenkrands had a decent opportunity just ten yards out but he squandered it as he blasted a shot over the bar.
