The annual Sport Social Media Index ranks 148 sports outfits from the world of football, rugby and cricket.
Produced by agency Umpf with partners William Hill, the index measures the performance of each team based not just on algorithm but research from a team of nine people who looked at eight social networks, as well as a panel of four judges who presided over the results.
Blues came in as the top team in the Sky Bet Championship and sixth in the overall table – ahead of stellar names such as Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
The Sport Social Media Index was four months in the making and is a benchmark of social media success among professional British sports teams.
Commenting on Blues’ impressive ranking, Andy Walker, the club’s head of media and communications, said: “I am very proud of Birmingham City’s performance in the inaugural Sport Social Media Index.
“To be among the top six professional British sports clubs for the best use of social media is testimony to my team’s hard work to ensure that we continue to inform, entertain and engage with our supporters on a daily basis.
“When it comes to social media, we may not have the stature to have the most followers or resources to be the most innovative but this is solid proof that we are doing it right.”
