New signing Matt Green says he is desperate to show that he has the ability to excel in the Championship

The 26-year-old joined Blues on a two-year deal earlier today as a free agent, having seen his contract at newly-promoted League Two side Mansfield Town expire last month.

During his time with The Stags he found the back of the net an impressive 57 times in two seasons and was instrumental in helping them into the Football League.

“It feels great to get the deal done,” Green told “I know what I’m doing now and can be focused and get started in the Championship.

“There were various other clubs in the mix, but Birmingham is a massive club and I liked what the gaffer said to me. He’s a young guy and very ambitious and there was only one place I really wanted to come throughout the summer. I spoke to various other clubs but I’m just happy to get it all finalised now and I can’t wait to get started.”

Green has previous Championship experience from when he spent just over a year with Cardiff between 2007 and 2008. However, he found his chances limited in the Welsh capital and made just seven appearances for the Bluebirds - all from the substitutes’ bench.

“This is my second chance to play in the Championship and I just can’t wait to take it with both hands,” said Green. “I’ve got a point to prove because I’ve got unfinished business in the Championship. I had a little taste of it when I was younger and possibly I was a little bit immature but I’ve grown a lot. I realise I have to work hard to get back to this level and for people to take me seriously. But I relish the chance and I will be relentless with a 100 per cent work rate.”

Turning to his goal record and his determination to become a regular scorer in a higher league, he added: “I scored 57 goals in two seasons and created a lot as well. The manager said to me to just hit the back of the net when I get my chances and that’s what I’m here to do. I’m not coming here to rest on my laurels. I just want to kick on now.”

Boss Lee Clark was naturally excited to be able to add Green to his squad and feels that there is every chance that his natural goalscoring instinct will translate to the Championship.

“Matt is someone who has been very successful at a lower level,” added Clark. “He’s got those natural goalscoring instincts of getting into the box as well as terrific pace. I said to him the goal is the same size, the ball is the same size and the pitches are the same size whatever level you’re playing at and you’ve got that natural instinct, so go and continue it.

“I want him to have the belief that he belongs here. He’s deserved this opportunity and I’ve got every confidence in him. I’m looking forward to working with him and he’ll score goals. You’re a goalscorer at any level but it might be even easier for him because we’ll have more players making more chances for him.”
