Blues got their pre-season off to winning ways with a good workout in the Derbyshire sunshine.

Hosts Alfreton Town, of the Blue Square Bet Premier, opened the scoring after just four minutes when Daniel Meadows found Kristian Ramsey-Dickson in too much space to hook home from eight yards out.

However Blues, who fielded two different XIs in each half, soon got into their stride and their quality began to shine through. Olly Lee drew the visitors level in the 20th minute with a fine finish after pouncing on Akwasi Asante's rebounded effort from 18 yards out.

It was then Alfreton defender Chris Westwood who put Blues in front in the 32nd minute. Neal Eardley's dangerous cross from the right being headed into his own net by a diving header at the far post by Westwood.

With a new line-up out to face the energy-sapping heat after the break, it only took Blues two minutes to make it 3-1. Good work from Lee Novak saw the ball find fellow new recruit Andrew Shinnie just inside the area and the Scotland international saw his effort deflected home.

Chris Burke showed his class throughout the half with a number of neat touches, and the Scottish International almost got his name on the scoresheet with a thunderous effort from 25 yards which whistled over the crossbar.

Shinnie could have doubled his tally, after some clever hold-up play by Lee Novak, but fired a low shot just wide of the mark.

Blues' second-half goalkeeper, Darren Randolph, was largely untested as Lee Clark's men comfortably saw the game out.
