Birmingham City Football Club has opted to withdraw from this season’s U21 Premier League Cup having inadvertently fielded an ineligible player.

Following Tuesday afternoon’s 2-1 round of 32 victory over Newcastle United at St. Andrew’s, it came to light that on-loan striker Aaron Mclean had represented parent club Hull City against Derby County in the inaugural competition’s qualifying round 2.

The Premier League was immediately informed once this oversight was unearthed.

In order to protect the integrity of the U21 Premier League Cup, the club has now opted to withdraw from the competition with immediate effect.

The club will, however, continue to participate in the U21 Professional Development League Two, which continues with the visit of Sheffield Wednesday to Wast Hills on Monday (1pm kick-off).
