The Reaction: Blues 1 Barnsley 1

Blues boss Lee Clark and winger Chris Burke give their thoughts on the New Year's Day draw against Barnsley at St. Andrew's.

Lee Clark’s overall view on the match…

“We started the game ever so well and scored a really good goal. We pushed on and then for whatever reason we let Barnsley get a bit of the play. We know they've got some talented footballers in their team and they passed the ball around quite well. In the second half we made an error to give the ball away which led to the free-kick and that's something you can’t legislate for. It was a fantastic execution from the fella that scored it but we're a bit deflated because we feel we've dropped two points there."

Clark's disappointment at his side’s failure to kill the game off…

“We created enough chances to win the game. It's been a common theme in the home games. We start ever so well and get ourselves in front. Then we have a little nervy spell, the opposition might get a goal and then we kick on again. It's like we've got to get angry before we have a go back. In the last 15 or 20 minutes after they scored we put them under pressure, put the ball in the box and had shots, so why not just play like that after the opening goal and put the game out of Barnsley's reach? While it's 1-0 there is always an opportunity. And like I've said many times set pieces are a great leveller in the game no matter how you're playing. If you can get a good execution like they have there to get back in the game. “

Clark on maintaining his belief in his players…

“We just can't get to that next step because three points today would have put us in a terrific position in terms of looking a bit higher. It's frustrating because we should have won the game. It's an example to my young players about trying to do the right things. One thing I know is that they'll learn from it and try to put it right.”

Clark on the sickness bug that affected three of his players…

“I had three players physically sick at half-time - Olly Lee, Lee Novak and Paul Robinson. I had to keep an eye on those three lads because they were basically running on empty. There is a bug going round the club, so we'll basically shut the club down now for a couple of days because we can't have this spreading through the rest of the group."

Clark on Kyle Bartley’s injury…

“Kyle Bartley pulled his hamstring so that's a huge blow. When you're sprinting flat out like he was and you pull up like that it doesn't look good. He'll have a scan in a couple of day’s time once the injury has settled down. Without being a medical expert I would have thought he'll be out for a decent amount of time, but hopefully I'm wrong.”

Chris Burke’s reaction to the result…

“I think that sometimes playing away from home suits us better with the players we've got. But obviously we're disappointed that we didn't get the three points today.”

Burke on the young players struggling during parts of the game…

“Of course that's what happens with young players they make mistakes, but they're learning very well.”

Burke on his partnership with right-back Paul Caddis…

“Paul is a fantastic player. He's not just a defender; he's a football player and knows where to be. It’s good to play with him.”
