A young Blues U21s side battled to a goalless draw at their Leeds United counterparts’ Thorp Arch training ground.

During a scrappy match with very few chances, Koby Arthur could have won it for Richard Beale’s side right at the death when he dragged an effort across the face of goal and narrowly wide.

Apart from that late chance, Blues rarely threatened Daniel Atkinson in the Leeds goal, while at the opposite end Nick Townsend comfortably dealt with everything that came his way.

Beale fielded two trialists, forwards Ricardo Gomes and Ryan Crowther, who got 45 and 67 minutes respectively under their belts during an uneventful encounter in frosty Yorkshire.

Townsend was called into action in the seventh minute to palm away skipper Chris Dawson’s 20-yard free-kick.

It wasn’t until the half-an-hour mark when Atkinson had his gloves warmed by easily claiming a low Scott Allan free-kick from the left at his near post.

The best chance of the first-half came Leeds’ way on the stroke of half-time; Lewie Coyle’s excellent cross from the left picking out the head of Eoghan Stokes from six yards only for the effort to sail over.

Leeds notched it up a gear after the break and Townsend made a good block to deny Luke Booker in the 54th minute after he’d been cleverly played in by substitute Luke Parkin.

Dawson was pulling the strings for Leeds and, after good link-up play with Kalvin Phillips in the 63rd minute, put through Lewis Walters but he dragged his low effort just wide.

Phillips went even closer for the hosts four minutes later when his shot from the right side of the area cannoned off the near post.

At the opposite end, Liam Truslove hooked over from 18 yards in the 74th minute before Blues’ best chance of a winner arrived with seconds on the clock.

Allan’s charge forward picked out Arthur on the left side of the area and his low drive beat the ‘keeper but agonisingly ended up on the wrong side of the far post.
