Birmingham City boss Lee Clark has swooped to sign Manchester United U21s captain Tom Thorpe on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old centre-back arrives at St. Andrew's  on an emergency loan until 3 May, with his parent club having the option to recall after 28 days.

Accomplished on the ground and excellent in the air, Thorpe was formerly captain of the England U19s side and subsequently moved up to represent the Three Lions at U20s level.

The Manchester-born academy product, captained United's youth side when they won the 2011 FA Youth Cup and also led them to victory in the U21 Premier League trophy last year against Tottenham.

Thorpe, who has been handed first-team squad number 5, will come straight into contention for tomorrow's Sky Bet Championship game against Derby County (3pm kick-off).
