Blues U18s suffered a last-gasp defeat to Huddersfield Town
The Terriers' victory over Blues also saw them secure the u18s Professional Development League 2 North title.
Blues more than matched their high-flying opponents and should have taken the lead when the ball appeared to cross the Huddersfield goal line before being cleared.
But it the hosts that drew first blood in the 74th minute, when Ben Atkinson latched onto a pass before firing the ball home.
Blues were back in the contest just five minutes later when Kyle McFarlane found the back of the net. The frontman then saw his shot saved at point blank range.
As the game entered stoppage time, Blues' saw their hopes of claiming a deserved point ended when Huddersfield tapped in the winning goal.
Despite the defeat, Blues academy coach Steve Spooner was delighted with his side's showing.
"The boys were excellent and I can’t praise them highly enough," he said. "Their work rate, technical ability, understanding of the game plan and their implementation of it was first-class.
"We deserved at least a point and the players can feel proud of themselves.
"With the score at 1-1 we had a couple of good opportunities to go into the lead, but unfortunately we couldn’t take them. Fair play to Huddersfield they stayed with it and took their opportunity right at the end."
