Senior professional development coach

Alan Thompson was appointed as Birmingham City’s senior professional development coach in June 2012.

In his role he will focus on the club’s Under 21 side, coaching and managing the technical and tactical development of players under 21 years, and preparing them for professional football at the highest level.

Thompson began his playing career as professional with Newcastle United in 1993. He later went on to have spells with Bolton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Celtic, Leeds united and Hartlepool, before hanging up his playing boots in 2008, having made over 500 appearances.

He got his first taste of coaching at Newcastle United where he coached both the academy and reserve team between 2008 and 2010.

He then joined Celtic’s backroom team as a first-team coach in 2010 following Neil Lennon’s appointment as manager at Celtic Park.
