George McGee and Liam Truslove scored the goals that secured victory for Blues U21s in their latest pre-season outing at Wast Hills this afternoon.
The visitors engineered the best openings of the first-half with Nick Townsend called upon to make one good save and a couple of other Stanley headers flashing wide of the target.
But Blues were far livelier after the break and took the game to their opponents. Half-time substitute McGee almost made an immediate impact but his close-range header was palmed away by the keeper. However, the 18-year-old striker was not to be denied just before the hour.
Today’s new recruit Denny Johnstone played a part in what was a terrific team move. Josh Cogley and Reece Webb were also involved before Johnstone played the ball out wide to Navid Nasseri. This week’s other Blues new boy whipped a dangerous cross into the box and McGee cleverly guided his header back across the keeper and into the net.
Johnstone completed 67 minutes of the contest and showed up well with some good hold-up play and distribution, without getting an opportunity to mark his first appearance since his arriving from Celtic with a goal.
With Blues U18s currently on tour in Holland, Alan Thompson supplemented his squad with four of the club’s promising schoolboys, along with a trialist, and they all got a taste of the action late on. The final substitution proved the catalyst, albeit indirectly, for the second and concluding goal, in the final minute of normal time.
Nasseri was on the receiving end of a clattering challenge from behind that left the Iran U21 international strewn on the floor for several minutes. After prolonged treatment the midfielder was replaced and, direct from the resultant free-kick, Truslove showed great vision to impudently lob the ball over the visiting keeper’s head from fully 45 yards.
It was the perfect way to cap off another useful run-out for Thompson’s young charges as they gear up for the start of their league campaign.
