Manager Lee Clark reflects on a frustrating opening day defeat against Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Lee Clark on the result...

"The best team won - no complaints. I think my lads have competed well, we’ve give two extremely poor goals away.

"When I say competed well, we’ve worked hard, we’ve battled, we’ve tied to win tackles and headers, but we were so negative in our attacking play and I can’t understand why because we’ve done really well pre-season and the players should be playing full of confidence.

"It’s there to see in the stats, I don’t think we’ve had a shot on target so you can’t win a football match if that happens."

Clark on the positives to take from the game...

“There are some obviously young Demarai - I don’t think we got him the ball enough - when we did he was exciting.
"But we shouldn’t have to rely on an 18-year-old boy, we’ve got to help him. The senior players need to give good performances alongside him not him be the shining light for us."

Clark on not getting carried away...

"We’ve got to work on things. These players have shown me over the last six weeks that they listen and learn and want to do the right things.

"It’s frustrating, we wanted to give our fans more to get excited about."

Clark on the potential arrival of a new recruit...

"The Board have backed me and we're in advanced negotiations with another club about a player who we hope to bring in early next week."
