Blues U18’s recorded their biggest win in many years with a 9-3 success away at Sheffield Wednesday.
The goal rout saw two Blues players score hat-ticks - Kyle McFarlane and Wes McDonald, with , Charlie Cooper, Sam Deadfield and Corey O’Keefe all notching a goal apiece.
Blues raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of Charlie Cooper from the penalty spot and Wes McDonald. But the young Owls found themselves level after 20 minutes thanks to goals from Mason Duffy and Franck Betra.
But following a superb display of clinical finishing Blues went on to score seven more times without reply, before Fraser Preston scored a late consolation for the hosts.
Academy coach Steve Spooner (pictured) was naturally full of praise for his players.
“It was 2-2 after 20 minutes and at that stage it could have gone either way," he admitted.
“We then adjusted one or two things, including speeding up our passing and being more positive and we took our chances.
“Last year at times our approach play was ever so good and it was just the end product that let us down. But now they’ve got better with their end product and more ruthless in front of goal.
“It’s the biggest scoreline I’ve experienced at U18s level and I’m absolutely delighted.”
