Lee Clark’s thoughts following his side’s cup exit against Sunderland.

Clark on the scoreline…
“It’s not a fair reflection of the game. We played well and the scoreline doesn’t do my players justice. Ultimately the first goal goes in and the players start chasing for an equaliser and with the quality of Premier League players when the game becomes stretched they pick you off. We were more than a match for a very good team."

Clark on what he said to his players...
"I’ve said to the players that it’s not a true reflection and they played really well. I’m delighted with everyone. I told them to come into the training ground tomorrow ready to recover for Saturday with a smile on their faces after another positive performance. Yes, we could have done one or two things a little bit better when we went one down, but I can’t fault the players for trying to get an equaliser. It’s a cup competition so you might as well go for it if you go a goal behind that late in the game. We just got picked off a little bit easily towards the end, which made the scoreline a little bit unjust because we created chances and caused them problems."

Clark on the Sunderland side...
"Sunderland are a good team and they showed us respect when the team sheets were put in. They saw us as a threat and there weren’t many changes to their team from the weekend."

Clark on Neal Eardley’s injury…
“He tweaked his groin, which was a shame because I thought he started the game ever so well. He started on the front foot and was defending really well. We’re hoping that’s all it is, a little bit of tightness."

Clark on the players he brought into the side…
“I thought the lads that came in did well and gave a good account of themselves. At half-time I just asked that when they were in the final third to have a little bit more belief and attack their opponent or get a shot off and when they did that they did well.”
