Blues played out an entertaining 0-0 draw against Dutch top-flight side Roda JC at St. Andrew’s on Saturday afternoon.

In what was their penultimate pre-season fixture, Gary Rowett’s side acquitted themselves well and created a host of chances.

Defensively, they also looked extremely competent and restricted their opponents to very few openings.

The game started at a decent tempo and Blues had an excellent opportunity to take the lead after just six minutes when Diego Fabbrini burst through down left and into the area.

The Italian squared the ball, but just before it reached an unmarked Clayton Donaldson it was intercepted at the near post by Ananou and put behind for a corner.

Fabbrini himself then tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his shot was held at the second time of asking by goalkeeper Benjamin van Leer.

Van Leer had the post to thank for keeping the ball out after 18 minutes when David Cotterill hit a powerful curling effort from 20 yards. The ball took a deflection on the way, but with the keeper beaten it cannoned off the upright and across the front of the goal line.

Having withstood a short spell of Roda pressure, Blues weren’t too far away just after the half-hour mark when Cotterill put a neat cross in from the right which Donaldson headed just wide.

Fabbrini was then set up with a chance by Donaldson, but his shot was just off target.

Blues were having their best spell of the game now, with Roda forced to defend their own box in numbers.

Having been largely ineffective in an attacking sense during the first-half, Roda manager Yannis Anastasiou made three changes at the break.

With 49 played, Roda had their first meaningful attempt on goal when Mikhail Roshheuvel was on target with a low shot which Tomasz Kuszczak saved down to his left.

Just after the hour-mark Blues boss Rowett made a triple substitution of his own when he sent on Robert Tesche, Reece Brown and jack Storer for Stephen Gleeson, Cotterill and Fabbrini.

Blues began to up the ante and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Donaldson appeared to be bowled over just inside the area.

The striker managed to get back to his feet but his shot was blocked by the keeper's legs at close range.

With a quarter of an hour of normal time remaining Otabor took the ball down the left, before chipping it to the far post where Storer glanced a header just wide.

Despite it only being a friendly, Blues continued to go in search of a winner and Donaldson had a chance blocked before Spector headed wide.

The lively Jamaican international then burst throw but his shot was excellently saved by the diving van Leer.
