Blues under-18s put in a solid defensive display to beat top-of-the-table Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

The match was won by Blues courtesy of a first half own goal from the visitors. Steve Spooner’s (pictured) youngsters created several other openings, but were unable to convert them.

Spooner was happy with the way his side went about the game. “It was a good result and I was really pleased we kept a clean sheet against a decent Forest side,” said the academy coach.

“We started the game well and could have been 1-0 up within the first two minutes. As the half went on we stopped getting close to Forest and they had us on the back-foot for 15 or 20 minutes without really working our goalie.

“But the back four stayed strong, they were well-organised and defended well. In the second half we got ourselves back into the match and defended higher up the pitch and made it a lot more compact.

“We enjoyed some good possession and good chances and I was extremely  pleased in terms of the number of shots we had on target. It was just a shame we couldn’t add to the goal tally.”
