Blues wrapped up their first victory in the 2012/13 Professional Development League 2 North Division with a win over Huddersfield Town at St. Andrew’s.

A brace from Akwasi Asante and goals from trialists Aaron Tumwa and Matthew Rickard ensured that Richard Beale’s side picked up their first three points of the new-look competition.

Huddersfield Town, whose consolation goal came courtesy of a Tom Clark header, were left frustrated by a string of fine saves from man-of-the-match Nick Townsend in the hosts’ goal.

Despite a positive start from the young Terriers – Jimmy Spencer stinging Townsend’s finger tips with an 18-yard effort before Emmitt Delfouneso was on hand to block Chris Atkinson from close range – it was Blues who took the lead eight minutes in.

Former Watford winger Tumwa found himself unmarked in the Huddersfield box allowing him to blast home Mitch Hancox’s low pass from the left.

The visitors continued to work the ball well and pile on the pressure but wasted a glorious chance to level in the 28th minute. Dale Hopson’s throughball put captain Jordon Sinnott in on goal but Townsend was out quick to stop an eventual tame effort.

Blues punished Huddersfield further by doubling their advantage in the 39th minute. Jack Deaman’s corner from the left was flicked on by Josh Hawker and Asante was there to force the ball home at the far post.

The hosts then put their noses further in front five minutes later; Hawker again with an assist, this time squaring for Rickard to fire home from 10 yards.

However Huddersfield ensured that the game was still alive at the interval. Tom Clark rose well to power home his header from Sinnott’s corner.

The scoreline was flattering Blues and the away side were determined to correct that at the start of the second-half.

However the Terriers found themselves being consistently thwarted by the excellent Townsend in the Blues goal. The highlights of a series of Townsend saves included a one-handed effort to prevent Atkinson’s flicked header looping into the far corner and a low block to keep out Hopson’s drive from the left, before Matt Crooks fired over from yards out.

Asante added to Huddersfield’s frustration four minutes from the end by bustling past his marker inside the area to tap beyond Lloyd Alinson at his near post.

Next up for the development squad is an away trip to Barnsley on Monday 3 September (1pm kick-off).
