Football returns to St. Andrew’s this weekend with the visit of Belgian opposition for the Blues first-team squad’s final pre-season fixture of the summer.
It promises to be the perfect preparation ahead of a week that will include the Capital One Cup first-round tie at home to Barnet and the npower Championship opener against Charlton Athletic at St. Andrew’s.
Clark admits that he’ll make a host of changes from his recent pre-season starting XIs in a bid to get all his squad up to speed with game time. That includes Olympian Butland, who was called into the senior England squad for the forthcoming friendly against Italy earlier today, and loanee Morrison.
However it’s unlikely that Blues’ latest recruit, left-back Ben Gordon, will be involved in the Antwerp match.
The gaffer explained to bcfc.com: “The starting XI against Antwerp will be players who are a bit short on the minutes. We’ll be looking to bring them into line with the rest of the group so we’ve got a full squad of players who have roughly played the same amount of minutes as each other so they’re all fit and raring to go for Barnet on Tuesday.
“So from the group that started the last two games and did so well, they’ll now be quite a bit of change from those starting XIs. It’s important that these lads continue to get the minutes. It’s no good me relying on the same starting XI during pre-season because no doubt about it, over the course of the season all of these players are going to be needed at some stage. They have to all be up to the right level in terms of game time.”
