BLUES RES 1 MAN CITY RES 1
Triallists Nigel Quashie and Souleymane Mamam both came through 90 minutes of action as the reserves were held 1-1 at St. Andrew's by Manchester City.
They were watched from the stands by Blues first team manager Alex McLeish, who is set to make decisions on whether to offer loan spells to the midfield pair.
Both had decent games against the Premier League outfit, with Quashie - who has been out of competitive action for nearly 16 months with a foot injury - anchoring the team in the centre of the park and Mamam initially playing out wide on the right but moving in to a more central role when Academy starlet Mitch McPike picked up a knee injury just past the half-hour mark.
It was another product of the youth set-up, right-back Jared Wilson, who gave Blues the lead on 20 minutes.
He charged forward from defence and exchanged a one-two with Cameron Jerome before firing into the net past a despairing Greg Hartley.
McPike was stretchered off on 33 after an accidental clash of knees with City's Adam Clayton and was replaced by Ashley Sammons.
Three minutes before the break Ian Daly equalised for the visitors with a goal that Colin Doyle could do nothing about.
He took down a high ball with a lovely first touch and paused momentarily before taking perfect aim, low into the bottom corner.
Quashie showed his set-piece ability right on half-time after Jerome had been fouled in a wide position.
He sent in a testing free-kick from the left, just outside the box, that Clayton McDonald was forced to turn behind.
The second half was one of few chances although Quashie came close when he narrowly squeezed a shot wide from just outside the box and then Sammons saw a long-range effort deflected behind.
Marcus Bent, who along with Franck Queudrue also played the full game, led the line well with Jerome and Mamam, who showed a good competitive edge, was unlucky to be booked on 63 for what the referee decided was a high challenge.
When Bent was brought down just outside the area with 20 minutes left Queudrue stepped up and curled in a left-footed free-kick that skimmed the top of the bar.
The final two opportunities both fell to the visitors and both in injury time at the end of the match.
The first saw Doyle (pictured) make the save of the match after a ball from the right was cut back to City sub David Ball. He met it with a sweet contact but the Blues keeper palmed it away at full stretch diving to his left.
Ball then had his head in his hands once again as his curled effort from 12 yards thudded back off the post in what was the final action of the night.
