Franck Queudrue |
Terry Westley's side began the game in the worst possible fashion as they fell behind to their hosts less than two minutes in.
Under pressure on the by-line, Franck Queudrue conceded a corner which was subsequently whipped in by Scott Malone for Wolves defender George Elokobi to head home unopposed at the near post.
Just five minutes later Terry Westley's side came close to surrendering a second goal as Wolves frontman Ashley Hemmings rounded Colin Doyle and shot, but fortunately Jacob Rowe was alert to clear the ball off the line and away from the danger zone.
The Blues defence were struggling to cope with the pace of the home side on the break and on 13 minutes Vignal was penalised on the left for climbing over Greg Halford.
Scott Malone delivered a neat free kick deep into the Blues box which found Elokobi, but the Wolves man headed inches wide from close range.
It took until the 20th minute for Blues' first attempt on goal which came after Queudrue let fly with a dipping effort from more than 40 yards, but Wolves keeper Matt Murray managed to grab the ball above his head at the second attempt
That was the last of the action for Murray who left the pitch minutes later in what was his first game back in action after a year out with injury.
As the half progressed Blues were beginning to see more of the ball and were pressing the home side in the midfield areas, but were finding it difficult to find the pass that would unlock a well marshalled Wolves defence.

Terry Westley made one change for Blues at half time with Luke Rowe coming on for Vignal at left back.
Then with 50 minutes on the clock Wolves doubled their advantage.
A break down the left saw Jarvis slide into the box for James Spray.
Spray took aim before curling an effort past Colin Doyle which came straight back off the post, but unluckily for Blues it fell straight into the path of Greg Halford to slide it home.
Substitution number two for Blues came just before the hour mark when Akwasi Asante replaced Ashley Sammons in the centre of the park.
A clumsy challenge on the edge of his own box by Espinoza on Spray saw the Ecuadorian booked and Wolves awarded a free kick in a dangerous position, but fortunately Halford was unable to keep his 20 yard effort down.
Not content to sit back on their lead Wolves continued to pose Blues problems.
Surman ballooned a shot over and then Spray went close from 20 yards.
On 73 minutes Mutch was cautioned for a rash challenge on Matt Jarvis.
A wonderful Franck Queudrue run almost ended with a goal late on.
The Frenchman burst through from his own half, evaded several challenges, played two one-twos with his team mates, before unleashing a great curling shot which narrowly missed the top corner.
As the game entered the last ten minutes Espinoza saved a further Wolves goal as he blocked Matt Jarvis's shot on his own goal line.
With both teams tiring in the latter stages the game opened up somewhat and Blues created their best chance of the evening deep into stoppage time when James O'Shea's pass found Robin Shroot but his close range shot was well parried by the Wolves keeper.
But on the balance of goalscoring chances Blues could have no complaints about the result.
