 First Team Match Report

When Steve Bruce checked the fixture list before his side embarked on their Stern John's penalty kick that was saved by Edwin Van Der Sarfirst Premiership camaign, Fulham at home would have been one of the games that he would have earmarked as a potential three pointer.

Even though Jean Tigana's squad still contains a plethura of international players, it was still a fixture that held the promise of victory for the Blues boss.

He would therefore have been desperately disappointed by this goalless stalemate, not least for the fact that the visitors finished the game with nine men.

Rufus Brevett was sent off in the first half for a handball and Steve Marlet followed him for an early bath towards the end of the game.

Stern John also fluffed the spot kick that resulted from Brevett's goalline save and Blues had two other goals wiped out for offside.

Geoff Horsfield fights for possession of the ball in the game against FulhamBlues came out of the traps like a rabbit chasing a hare and deserved better reward for their early pressure.

Geoff Horsfield was given his first Premiership start since late August and almost rewarded boss Steve Bruce as early as the fourth minute.

The former Fulham forward showed good close control inside the area to beat his marker before firing in a low shot that was only just tipped away by Edwin Van Der Sar in the visitors' goal.

Stan Lazaridis had earlier seen a free-kick curl inches over the bar but had it found the target and beaten Van Der Sar it would have been ruled out for offside.

It was that same official, Mr Martin from Yorkshire, that frustrated Blues by raising his flag again to halt Darren Purse's celebrations at converting a chance from close range.

Blues showed plenty of attacking purpose during the early stages but found itPaul Devlin races away with the ball during the draw with Fulham hard to maintain any flowing moves.

Fulham worked hard to close down their opponents and not give the Blues players any time on the ball.

As a result of that Lazaridis was dispossessed in the middle of the park and the ball eventually came through to Steve Marlet who flashed a shot well wide.

The visitors were appealing for a penalty when Steve Finnan ran across the path of Jeff Kenna inside the area but the referee immediately showed the former Blues man the yellow card for diving.

Ironically, just seconds later, the referee did point to the spot when Purse's header was blatantly palmed away from the foot of the post by Fulham defender Rufus Brevett.

Referee Messias also had no option than to send off the former QPR player and reduce the visitors to ten men.

Jovan Kirovski shoots wide against FulhamStern John took on the spot kick responsibility but was soon wishing he hadn't as his weak effort was blocked by Van Der Sar.

Horsfield followed up the rebound but his shot went wide of the post to the delight of the small band of Cottagers fans behind that goal.

Despite the numerical advantage, Blues still struggled to create any good goalscoring chances during the early stages of the second half.

One did eventually arrive after 16 minutes when Lazaridis's free-kick found the head of Purse but Van Der Sar pulled off an incredible point blank save.

Olivier Tebily fizzed a shot just wide of the target on 74 minutes and it proved to be his final contribution as he was replaced by Bryan Hughes.

Bruce also introduced striker Clinton Morrison to replace the largely ineffectiveStern John rises well to head the ball during the draw against Fulham Stern John.

Marlet was dismissed with 11 minutes remaining for kicking out at Savage after being fouled by the Welshman.

Savage was replaced by Jovan Kirovski soon after and hobbled off the pitch - a sight that would not have pleased his international boss Mark Hughes.

Blues could still not find a way through the a stubborn Fulham defence who played through the five minutes of injury time like their lives depended on it.

Morrison eventally found the back of the net only for the goal to again be ruled out by the linesman's offside flag.

This was certainly two points dropped for Bruce's side and they must now prepare for next Saturday's trip to Sunderland.
