 First Team Match Report

heskeygoalBlues cemented their King of the  Midlands' title with a four goal demolition of a disappointing West Brom side at St. Andrew's this afternoon

Blues raced into the lead with three first half goals from Robbie Savage, Clinton Morrison and Emile Heskey, before Darren Anderton made it a four goal super show with an 80th minute strike, which at the same time heralded Blues' biggest Premiership victory to date.

Steve Bruce kept faith with the same XI that emphatically beat the Villa last week.

Mario Melchiot was hoping to be on the bench but failed a late fitness test.

West Brom had a couple of familiar faces in the line-up with Darren Purse starting and Geoff Horsfield on the bench.

Both former Blues men received a warm reception from the St. Andrews faithful prior to the game.

It took just 25 seconds for referee Mike Riley to dish out his first lecture of the game to Olivier Tebily for a late tackle on Greening on the touchline.

Within 60 seconds Blues should have had a penalty when David Dunn was clearly tripped by Bernt Haas.

But to the detriment of Blues and through Dunn's honesty he got back up and tried to weave his way towards goal as the referee waved play on.

Blues then took the lead on three minutes through a Robbie Savage penalty, after former Blues man Purse was adjudged to have fouled Clinton Morrison.

The move began with Taylor's long punt up field which was flicked on by Heskey to Morrison.

The Eire international continued his run into the box and was clearly held by Purse who was the last man.

The referee pointed to spot but chose not to caution Purse.

savagepenaltyRobbie Savage stepped up and slotted the ball to the keeper's left sending him the wrong way and netting Blues' opener.

Having fallen behind the visitors were at sixes and sevens and David Dunn was causing a constant threat down the left.

In the tenth minute Dunn jinked his way past three defenders but finished with a shot which was charged down by Purse.

Blues had a scare in the 13th minute when the Baggies hit the woodwork.

Morrison's sliced clearance fell to Gera who struck a rising shot that rebounded off the underside of the bar and back to Greening, whose volley was well saved by Taylor.

There was a flashpoint in the 20th minute between fellow countrymen Robbie Savage and Jason Koumas.

Koumas caught Savage with a late challenge and Savage reacted angrily before the referee intervened.

brucemorrisonWhile Savage received treatment Mr Riley booked Jason Koumas.

Moments later Carter went close to having a memorable 21st birthday when he latched onto Johnson's headed cross but his close-range effort was blocked by Gaardsoe.

Blues doubled their lead in the 23rd minute with Clinton Morrison's third goal in as many games.

The move was started through Dunn's quick thinking when he quickly grabbed the ball following a foul by Purse on Heskey.

Fortunately Carter was on the same wavelength and raced past the static defence whilst Morrison was being yelled at by Steve Bruce to get into the box for the expected cross.

Carter's inch perfect pass found Morrison who took just one touch before hitting the ball home.

It was one-way traffic now as Blues romped into a three-goal lead on the half hour through Emile Heskey.

The impressive Dunn was the provider as he latched onto the ball before skillfully flicking it through for Heskey who smashed it low past Hoult.

Bernt Haas became the second Baggies player to be booked in the 32nd minute for a nasty high challenge on Lazaridis which possibly could have been a red card.

West Brom had a rare chance in the 39th minute when Koumas curled a free-kick inches wide of the top corner.

Two minutes from half-time Dunn went close when he cut in from the left and after a couple of trademark step-overs, hit a shot that flew a yard past the post.

A minute later Jonathan Greening was added to the increasing list of West Brom players in the referee's notebook when he clattered into Robbie Savage on the halfway line.

Half-time:  Blues 3-0 West Brom

dunnBryan Robson made one change for the second half with Robert Earnshaw replacing Zoltan Gera.

Blues started the half a little tentatively but Dunn continued his fine form with a 50-yard run that was finally ended with a trip by Koumas on the edge of the box.

Savage tried his luck with a quick free-kick that was easily saved by Hoult.

In the 53rd minute Blues finally had the first corner of the game that was took by Carter who was greeted with a Chorus of 'Happy Birthday to you' by the Tilton Road.

Two minutes later Greening got clear of Tebily down the left and pulled the ball back for Earnshaw but his shot was blocked by Lazaridis.

The loose ball rolled to Andrew Johnson who also had his shot charged down by Savage.

In the 58th minute Neil Clement tested Maik Taylor with a curling free-kick that the Blues number one tipped over the bar.

Thomas Gaardsoe became the fourth Baggies player in the book on the hour after fouling Dunn a number of times as he tried to break free from the makeshift midfielder.

The game was now turning into a stalemate with Blues playing deeper and deeper, but West Brom's huff and puff not enough to break them down.

There was a plenty of banter between both sets of supporters, with the Blues fans taunting the visitors with the old favourite 'Feed the Horse and he will score'.

In the 72nd minute Taylor almost gifted Earnshaw a goal when his poor clearance found the Welsh striker on the edge of the box.

With an empty goal to aim at the substitute summed up his team's miserable afternoon by hitting a terrible shot straight back at Taylor.

Bernt Haas was replaced in the 75th minute by Ronnie Wallwork. heskeymorrison

In the 78th minute Blues had a rare chance in the second half when Morrison almost got clear of Purse but the Baggies defender won the tussle.

In the 79th minute Darren Anderton replaced Damien Johnson.

A minute later Anderton made it 4-0 in the 80th minute with his first touch of the game.

Following a foul on Heskey the Blues substitute hit a powerful free-kick that took a deflection off the wall and gave Hoult no chance as it bounced past him into the net.

Goalscorer Robbie Savage was substituted two minutes from time by Jamie Clapham.

Albion's biggest cheer came in injury time when they won their first corner of the game.

From the resultant corner Earnshaw tested Taylor who punched it away to keep a rare clean sheet this season.

The back to back wins have eased worries of relegation for Blues as the Baggies remain rooted firmly to the bottom of the table.

andertonBlues fans left the ground in a happy festive mood looking forward to coming back to St. andrew's on Boxing Day.
