 First Team Match Report

jaidigoal2Blues jumped back into the automatic spot with a vital 2-1 against Leicester at The Walker Stadium.

Two quick goals by Radhi Jaidi and Sebastian Larsson in the first half gave Blues a comfortable lead for most of the game.

However in typical Blues fashion they conceded a late goal through Shaun Newton's free kick that had Blues on the rack for the final few minutes.

Steve Bruce was forced to make one change to the side with club captain Damien Johnson ruled out with the hamstring injury he picked up on Saturday.

Back on the right side came Sebastian Larsson having recovered from a bout of flu.

Former Blues favourite Geoff Horsfield was named as one of the substitutes for The Foxes.

The game started at a frantic pace with both sides chasing each other's heels but little in the way chances.

Blues broke the deadlock in the 16th minute through that man Radhi Jaidi again.

Steve Bruce was leaping about on the touchline three minutes later when Sebastian Larsson made it 2-0.

Fantastic work by Andy Cole down the left allowed him to break free from his marker who tried to pull him back.

The veteran striker ran on before rolling the ball across the box to Larsson who made no mistake from close range.

Midway through the half Martin Taylor was at hand to stop Matty Fryatt who was ready to unleash a shot from six-yards.

Fryatt continued to press forward but Taylor chaperoned him and the ball out of play.

In the 26th minute Fryatt managed to get an attempt on goal but this time his effort from the corner of the box curled just past the far post.

Bcolelues' defence went to sleep on the half our mark with several poor challenges eventually falling to 16-year-old Joe Mattock who saw his near post cross headed out for a corner by Jaidi.

In the 35th minute Fabrice Muamba made a rare venture into the six-yard box after racing onto Larsson's threaded pass.

Unfortunately his finish let him down again with what could be deemed a shot that rolled across the front of the goal.

As the game went on Blues looked the more likely to extend their lead although Leicester had their moments.

Five minutes before half-time the lively Fryatt raced into the box and flicked the ball inside towards Jason Jarrett but Doyle was quick to gather the ball.

Half time: Leicester 0 Blues 2

Blues started the second half in similar fashion and could have grabbed a third early on.
Larsson's neat ball forward was dummied by Muamba for Cole, but the advancing keeper spread himself to block his shot for a corner.

larssoncelebrationThere were half-hearted appeals for a penalty by the home side when Stephen Kelly slid in to tackle Richard Stearman but the referee gave the correct decision and waved play on.

Minutes later Stearman was lucky not to be booked for a late sliding challenge on McSheffrey but a lecture was deemed enough.

The next chance fell to McSheffrey who broke clear of the Leicester defence but failed to get his shot away with Leicester conceding a corner.

Nigel Worthington made the first substitution in the 61st minute bringing on Stephen Hughes for Jason Jarrett.

The volume was turned up at The Walker Stadium with the home side turning the evening into a cracking atmosphere with the Blues fans also making themselves heard.

Blues continued to look dangerous and Bendtner was next on the attack but just as he was about to strike the ball Stearman just got a toe in to concede another corner.

bendtnermcsheffreyColin Doyle kept Blues two goal cushion in tact moments later with a point blank save from Stearman's header.

Shaun Newton's corner eluded everyone but the centre half could only look on in disbelief as Doyle palmed it away.

Danny Cadamarteri was the next Leicester substitute to come on for the lively Matty Fryatt in the 65th minute.

In the 70th minute Mattock was sent clear down the left but his cross was sliced across goal by Martin Taylor and Hume headed the lose ball wide.

Leicester were throwing everyone forward and substitute Stephen Hughes tried his luck with a dipping effort that was straight at Colin Doyle.

Leicester made their final substitution bringing on former Blues hero Geoff Horsfield for fullback Alan Maybury.

Tmuambahe Horse made an immediate impact winning a free kick on the edge of the box after being fouled by Jaidi.

Ian Hume curled the free-kick low to Doyle's left but once again the Blues keeper pounced down to tip it round the post.

Newton's corner found Nils-Eric Johansson who struck a low shot to Doyle's right but once again he was there save yet again.

In the 82nd minute Leicester clawed a goal back through Shaun Newton's free-kick.

The Leicester winger curled the free kick over the wall and the impressive Doyle appeared to be wrong footed as the ball nestled in the bottom of the net.

Steve Bruce made his first substitution in the 84th minute bringing on Cameron Jerome for Nicklas Bendtner.

The substitution was marred by ugly scenes with Patrick Kisnorbo man handling him over the line and the referee not taking any action.

bendtnerIan Hume had Blues' hearts in their mouths with a curling effort whilst twice Cameron Jerome broke clear of The Foxes defence but failed to deliver.

It was a tickly end to the game with Leicester throwing everything at the visitors but Blues stood strong.

Deep into injury Mehdi Nafti replaced Sebastian Larsson who was booked for taking too long to leave the pitch.

In the final seconds Andy Cole was replaced by DJ Campbell.

Mehdi Nafti was next in the book for encroaching on a free kick.

Despite four minutes of agonising injury time Blues held onto to the massive three points at stake and send the massive Blue Army wild.
