 First Team Match Report

Cameron Jerome celebrates with Lee Bowyer after putting Blues ahead at StokeBlues made it eleven Premier League matches unbeaten with a well deserved 1-0 victory at the Britannia Stadium - one of the top flight's toughest venues to visit.

The fantastic run equals a club record of 11 top flight games without defeat that stretches all the way back to before the First World War and the 1907-08 season.

Striker Cameron Jerome's close range finish in the 50th minute earned the win and meant that a haul of no less than 32 Premier League points from the first 20 games was the perfect belated Christmas present for the travelling Blues faithful.

With four minutes played Blues keeper Joe Hart couldn't prevent a deflected Matthew Etherington cross from going behind for a corner. Liam Lawrence, back in the Stoke team, sent over a set-piece that flew across the six-yard box and several yards wide of target.

Scott Dann in action against Stoke at the Britannia StadiumThe home side were getting joy down the left hand side in the early stages and Etherington forced another corner three minutes later. This time the visiting defence handled the situation much better, Roger Johnson heading away the danger.

At the other end Seb Larsson almost got on the end of a Lee Bowyer cross but the ball flicked off Danny Higginbotham and behind for Blues corner.

James McFadden and Larsson combined for a short setpiece and when the ball was swung over into the area there were tentative cries for a penalty from one or two travelling fans behind the goal as the ball struck Tuncay on the chest.

On the quarter hour mark Chucho asked questions of centre-half Abdoulaye Faye when he got in behind the defender and almost onto a long Stephen Carr ball forward but the Stoke man timed his challenge to perfection to put the ball behind.

A minute later Lee Bowyer was booked for a challenge on Dean Whitehead before, on 20, Etherington's vicious corner evaded everyone inside the Blues box and very nearly flew in at the back post but Blues fans could breathe a sigh of relief as it went just past the woodwork.

The half continued being one of grit and determination but also one of few clear cut chances inside a noisy Britannia Stadium.

Faye conceded a corner on 31 and from an inswinging Larsson setpiece from the left Blues very nearly took the lead. Roger Johnson, Jerome and Liam Ridgewell all had bites of the cherry as the two sides played head tennis inside the six-yard box before Stoke cleared to safety through Ryan Shawcross.

At the other end Shawcross headed a looping Etherington corner over the bar - surely the two managers, Alex McLeish and Tony Pulis, patrolling their technical areas must have been hoping for more distinct opportunities than just corner after corner.

Barry Ferguson in action against Stoke at the Britannia StadiumTuncay had a shot blocked by Carr as Stoke pressed and when Blues ventured forward with six minutes to go until the break Larsson dragged a low shot four yards wide from the edge of the box.

On 43 James Beattie headed down into the ground and over the bar from Lawrence's cross from the right as a lively first 45 minutes, but one in which neither keeper had been troubled too much, came to a close.

Right on the stroke of half-time Larsson was incensed when Chucho went down under a Faye challenge inside the box. As the nearest Blues player to the incident the Swede clearly thought contact had been made, but referee Martin Atkinson waved play on.

Half time: Stoke 0 Blues 0

Both teams returned unchanged for the second half and Blues started on the front foot, Jerome firing in a shot from 20 yards just a couple of minutes after the re-start.

On 49 the visitors were on the charge again. McFadden released Larsson out on the right and his low cut-back was met by Chucho whose angled drive deflected over off Delap.

Stoke attempted to rally and, on 55, Tuncay couldn't quite rise high enough to reach Lawrence's cross from the right by-line but Etherington did get in a driven half volley that Hart saved well with his left hand.

The hosts were pressing their foot on the gas and Whitehead saw a long-range shot excellently blocked by the brave Dann before Faye's thumping header from a corner was tipped away by Hart diving to his right.

On the hour-mark Carr was booked following a foul on Etherington and the Blues man will now not be eligible to play in the FA Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest after what was his fifth yellow card of the season.

On 74 Etherington's inswinging free-kick was headed well wide by Faye with Alex McLeish's men remaining steadfast and organised at the back to preserve their lead.

With 13 remaining Keith Fahey came on for Larsson and the Irishman got himself involved in the game straight away with a series of typically accurate threaded passes to team-mates as Blues looked to move forward.

Chucho was felled by Delap on 85 as he charged down on goal and the Stoke man picked up a booking. McFadden curled the resulting free-kick from 25 yards straight into the wall.

The Ecuadorian was causing the hosts all sorts of problems and with three minutes left Shawcross also saw yellow for holding back the frontman on the edge of the area. Ferguson curled the setpiece round the wall but into the grateful arms of Sorensen.

In injury time at the end of the game goalscorer Jerome was booked for kicking the ball away but it was his earlier goal that ended up proving to be the most significant moment of the game and the difference between the two sides.
