 First Team Match Report

Liam RidgewellA stoppage time goal from Liam Ridgewell rescued a point for Blues as they played out a 1-1 draw against Spurs at St. Andrew's on Saturday.

Jermain Defoe gave his side the advantage after 69 minutes when he fired home a close range shot, before Ridgewell popped up in the 91st minute to score from two yards out.

Alex McLeish had named the same starting XI for a record breaking 11th consecutive league game.

New signing Craig Gardner was named on the bench, following his move from Aston Villa earlier this week.

And in the starting line-up for Spurs was former Blues loanee Wilson Palacios.

Both sides started the game brightly and in the second minute, David Bentley let fly with a shot from distance which cleared Joe Hart's bar.

Two minutes later Blues had their first opportunity when Lee Bowyer tested Heurelho Gomes with a close range side footed effort, but the Spurs keeper did well to hold onto the ball low down inside his own post.

Christian BenitezWith eight minutes on the clock Luka Modric had a glorious opportunity to open the visitors' account, but from just eight yards out he failed to hit the target and blasted the ball wide of the post.

Spurs began to put Blues under a fair bit of attacking pressure and McLeish's side had to stand tall in defence to prevent clear-cut scoring chances.

On 18 minutes Chucho had a great chance to give Blues the advantage.

The striker found space for himself right on the edge of the Spurs box, but with just Gomes to beat he fired straight at the Spurs keeper to the audible disappointment of the home crowd.

Seb LarssonIt was the Ecuadorian who was next to try his luck for Blues on 27 with a shot from range, but he was unable to keep it down and it flew several yards over the bar.

As the half progressed Blues were beginning to find more of their rhythm and were looking threatening on the counter attack

But just after the half hour mark it was Spurs that broke quickly on the right.

The ball was played into the path of David Bentley who ran on with it and let go with a strong shot that Joe Hart did well to push around the post for a corner.

With the half entering its final five minutes Blues forced three corners in quick succession but were unable to make any of them count.

Half time: Blues 0 Spurs 0

Stephen CarrSpurs started the second half extremely brightly and within two minutes of the restart Bentley tested Joe Hart.

The ball was swung across the front of the Blues box to Bentley on the right and he curled in a right footed effort which Hart managed to grab at the second attempt.

Blues should have been awarded a free kick after Wilson Palacios upended Chucho.

But instead Referee Stuart Attwell waved played on and the ball eventually fell to Spurs striker Peter Crouch who made a hash of his shot just six yards out and completely missed the target.

On 57 minutes Roger Johnson was cautioned by Mr Attwell for berating one of his assistants.

MichelBlues made their first substitution of the game just before the hour mark when Keith Fahey came on for Seb Larsson

Palacios then became the second player to receive a yellow when he brought down Lee Bowyer on the edge of the Spurs penalty area.

Unfortunately McFadden hit the resultant deadball straight into the wall.

McLeish made his second change of game on 65 when Spanish midfielder Michel replaced Lee Bowyer.

Defoe goalSomewhat against the run of play Spurs took the lead on 69 minutes.

Gareth Bale cut the down the left wing, before pulling the ball back into the Blues area.

Crouch stooped down low and got his head to the ball just a yard off the ground.

It skimmed off him and fell straight into the path of Defoe who made no mistake in dispatching the ball past Hart from close range.

Just minutes later Blues had a golden opportunity to repair the damage when Chucho evaded the Spurs offside trap and burst through on the visitors' goal.

Liam RidgewellBut as the Blues frontman unleashed his shot a Spurs defender managed to get a part of his body in the way and deflect the ball for a corner.

There was no let up in Blues' play and as they surged forward in search of an equaliser.

James McFadden fashioned Blues next opening when he shot just wide of the post on 76.

Just as it looked as if Blues were going to suffer their second defeat in the space of three days, Ridgewell converted a real poacher's goal in stoppage time.

McFadden crossed the ball to the far post, Jerome headed it back across the area and there was Blues centre half Ridgewell to blast the ball home from close range for a deserved point.
