Highlights: Liverpool 2 Blues 2

Blues kept up their impressive Premier League record at Anfield with an enthralling 2-2 draw against under pressure Liverpool.

Cameron Jerome celebrates after scoring for Blues at LiverpoolDavid Ngog gave the home side the lead in the 13th minute when he volleyed past Joe Hart but Blues were quickly back on level terms through Christian Benitez's first goal for the club.

A thumping long-range effort from Cameron Jerome then gave the visitors a shock half-time lead, but a controversial penalty was converted by Steven Gerrard with 18 minutes left to ensure the home side earned a share of the spoils.

Blues headed to Anfield armed with an impressive league record of just one defeat from their last five visits to Merseyside.

They began brightly with Chucho turning defence into attack by evading three challenges from red shirts before laying the ball on for Lee Bowyer to fire over from 25-yards.

Liverpool, without the talismanic Gerrard from the start and striker Fernando Torres altogether, were also quick to show their hand as Blues goalkeeper Hart pounced on a dangerous cut-back from Yossi Benayoun before pucking a toe-poke from Ngog out of the air.

After Glen Johnson tricked his way inside both James McFadden and Liam Ridgewell, the England keeper denied Ngog with an outstretched leg before sprawling across his goal to block Dirk Kuyt's follow-up.

However, Albert Riera latched onto the loose ball and delivered a teasing cross to the back-post for Ngog to send a vicious volley into the roof of the net.

There was more bad news for Blues three minutes later when Teemu Tainio, returning after an injury picked up on international duty with Finland three weeks ago, limped off and replaced by Lee Carsley.

Christian Benitez scores his first goal for Blues at LiverpoolThese days, though, Blues are full of a closely knit team-spirit instilled by Alex McLeish, so perhaps it was no surprise to see Chucho drag them back on level terms on 26 minutes.

Roger Johnson rose highest to head James McFadden's free-kick back across goal and reacted quickest to head Scott Dann's flick-on past a helpless Pepe Reina from six yards for his first goal in English football.

Hart's finger-tips denied Javier Mascherano and then Carsley cleared Ngog's tame shot off the line as Liverpool looked for a swift response.

But Blues continued to create chances of their own with Jerome slipping in Chucho, who rounded Reina but could only ripple the side-netting from an acute angle.

Cameron Jerome gets ready to put Blues 2-1 up at LiverpoolGerrard was introduced moments before the break for the injured Riera but the chorus of applause that greeted the England man turned instantly into stunned silence.

Jerome brought the ball down 35-yards from goal and quickly got it out of his feet before unleashing a ferocious strike which looped over Reina and into the net like an arrow.

Half-time: Liverpool 1, Blues 2

Kuyt wasted two chances at the start of the second period as Liverpool launch an assault on the visitors' goal. The Dutchman was first denied by Hart before firing over from a tight angle.

Benayoun then saw an ambitious effort fly wide before Gerrard went even closer on the hour mark when he headed Johnson's cross against the foot of the post with Hart rooted to the spot.

But the equaliser did arrive in the 71st minute - and in controversial fashion.

Ngog skipped clear of Stephen Carr's challenge before appearing to fall under the challenge of Carsley. Referee Peter Walton immediately pointed to the spot, although replays showed Ngog hurdling over Carsley's tackle and no contact was made by the Blues skipper.

Steven Gerrard slots home the equaliser from the penalty spot

Blues were furious and Carsley was booked in the aftermath for protesting his innocence as Gerrard stepped up and sent Hart the wrong way from the spot.

It was certainly harsh on Carsley and Blues, who had thrown their bodies on the line to block countless shots from the edge of the area and stood up well to the challenge.

Ngog almost grabbed his second five minutes later but could only divert Kuyt's cross a yard the wrong side of the post before a dipping effort from Gerrard flew narrowly over the bar.

It all meant for a nervy finish, but Blues held on for a hard earned point.
