The Latest from Blues

QPR 2 BLUES 1

pennantrangersBlues suffered their second consecutive friendly defeat after going down to 2-1 to Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road this afternoon.

All three goals came during the second period of the game.

Kevin Gallen put the home side in front just five minutes after the break, in what his own testimonial match, before former Blues striker Paul Furlong converted a second chance for Ian Holloway's side on 73 minutes.

Jermaine Pennant scored a consolation goal for Blues via the penalty spot on 90 minutes, but it was too little too late for Steve Bruce's side.

Blues started the game positively and Emile Heskey went close early on with a header which was well-held by Rangers keeper Simon Royce.

cunninghamrangersMaik Taylor then had to be alert in the Blues goal after Georges Santos hit a fiercely driven free kick, which he did well to collect at the second attempt.

Blues' next effort came just after the half hour mark from Finnish striker Mikael Forssell who fired just wide.

Dan Shittu went close to giving to giving Rangers the lead, but he was unable to keep his header down and it went just over the bar.

Both sides made one substitution at half time, with James Blake replacing Kenny Cunningham - who was unable to continue because of a rib injury he picked up earlier in the game, and Jake Cole replacing Royce in the Rangers goal.

The second half started quietly, before the deadlock was eventually broken on 73 minutes thanks to Gallen.forssellrangers

Gallen played a 1-2 with teammate (and Blues Ladies manager) Marcus Bignot, before the Rangers captain drilled the ball home via a deflection off teammate Stefan Moore's head from the edge of the box.

As Blues attempted to get back into the game, Jermaine Pennant put in a pinpoint cross from the right, but midfielder Muzzy Izzet could only head wide.

Then somewhat against the run of play Paul Furlong came back to haunt Blues with a well-taken goal on 73 minutes.

Marc Bircham's pass split the Blues defence, leaving Furlong to collect the ball and take it round Maik Taylor before slotting it home for a two goal cushion.

clemencerangersBlues continued to press and Jermaine Pennant almost reduced the deficit with a curling free kick, which unluckily hit the post.

The former Arsenal winger finally got on the scoresheet with 90 minutes on the clock, via the penalty spot

After being brought down by Ugo Ukah, he dusted himself down and stepped up to convert the resulting spot kick by placing it low to the goalkeeper's right.

To further cap a disappointing afternoon for Blues, early medical reports suggest that Irish defender Kenny Cunningham may have fractured his ribs.
