A Clinton Morrison goal was not enough to save a young and inexperienced Blues side from losing 2-1 at Peterborough United on Saturday afternoon.
Mark Wright's Posh side took the lead after just ten minutes when Nico Vaesen was unable to hold Sagi Burton's powerful free kick and Trevor Benjamin nipped in to chest the ball home.
Just a minute later Posh found themselves two goals to the good when poor defending by Blues allowed Danny Crow through on goal and he was able to drill the ball past Vaesen to the delight of the London Road crowd.
Blues' first meaningful chance fell to Clinton Morrison on 18 minutes, but his effort went just over the bar.
Njazi Kuqi then went desperately close to reducing the deficit but he saw his shot strike the inside of the post.
Just before the half hour mark Clinton Morrison finally fired Blues back into the game when he met Mat Birley's cross before blasting it past Mark Tyler in the Posh goal.
The lively-looking Morrison went close to leveling the scores just into the second half with a well-struck effort from just outside the box, but his effort sailed just over the bar.
Despite Blues' possession Posh were continuing to cause problems on the break and Benjamin fired just wide for Wright's side before Peter Gain forced Vaesen to parry the ball away.
Blues had a number of chances to at least secure a draw, with Morrison, Kuqi and Clapham all going close, but ultimately they were forced to leave London road empty handed.
