REACTION: Blues 1 Manchester United 3

Blues' Manager gives her thoughts on Blues' Conti Cup clash.

Manager Marta Tejedor felt heartened by the way Blues recovered from conceding within the opening minute against Manchester United.

Lizzie Arnot’s cross dropped in and Jane Ross put then United two up before Abbi Grant’s third goal in as many matches gave Blues hope.

Chances came and went for the hosts in the second half with Ella Toone wrapping up the away side's progress from Group C of the FA Women’s Continental League Cup with a classy finish in added time.

“I think the first goal killed us from the very beginning, it is very difficult to keep focus when you go behind like that after a few seconds,” said Tejedor.

“It was one of those goals that shouldn’t happen, it was bad luck and it kept us down for a while, we lost our identity.

“Later on we were able to play better football and when we were losing 2-1 we had three very clear chances. If we had made it 2-2 the game would have been very different.

“Sometimes Man United didn’t come (at us) and we needed to go and press them high to go for the goal. The whole approach would have been different if we could have got a second.”

The opener made for a baptism of fire for Blues keeper Alex Brooks but Tejedor pledged support for her stopper.

“It is so difficult for a keeper when that happens. I told her once it had gone in that it was done, that she had to refocus,” said Tejedor.

“All players make mistakes but when it is a keeper it is more obvious, I felt sorry for her but she will bounce back I am sure.”

Blues host United for the second time in five days on Sunday (2pm), this time with FA Barclays Women’s Super League points at stake, and Tejedor saw enough to believe her girls can turn the tables.

“Our approach was to grow through the week,” she added.

“Whatever happened in this game we planned to use it to learn and as an opportunity to be at our best on Sunday as well as competing for the cup.

“I am quite positive if this is the platform to start thinking about Sunday, I think we can compete because we might have got something else from this game.”
