REACTION: Blues Women 0 Bristol City Women 0 (1-3 on penalties)

Blues Women manager Marc Skinner believes his team can thrive in 2019, after progressing through to the quarter-finals of the Continental Cup with a goalless draw against Bristol City.

The two sides couldn’t be separated at Solihull Moors in the final game of the year, with the away side taking home an extra point after beating Blues on penalties.

Skinner was disappointed with his team’s performance; however it did not tarnish a year of football that has seen his side excel in the Women’s Super League.

On the performance, he said: “We’ve lost the game on a penalty shootout. I thought Bristol might come out and win the game and they didn’t really. They blocked up and tried to win it on the counter-attack and we just weren’t clinical in front of goal.

“I was bored a little bit, not negatively, but it has to be better than that. The performance was much improved in the second half, but we wasted time getting into the game in the first 45 minutes and we have to improve in order to progress further in the competiton.”

The boss is continually impressed by Blues’ progression and reaching the quarter-finals is another example of that. In the Continental Cup, Blues have won three and drawn two to finish in second.

He said: “We didn’t get to this stage this year and that is a sign of progression. We’ve got to be better than tonight though because we’ll be playing one of the group winners in the quarter-finals.

“We will be better after Christmas and now the players can have a mental break, not a physical break, over the festive period. 2019 has got to be the year that we really hit it hard and I’ll make sure that I drive them.”

Skinner outlined his aims for the forthcoming year, but jokingly said he will be trying to get some sleep, as Blues Women face an exciting 2019.

He said: “It will be nice to get as far as we can in the cups. But in the league we’ve got nine games left and we’d like to take maximum points as that would make it really interesting. I know people say that I’m being unrealistic, but why can’t we?

“If we focus on every individual task, every individual event, who knows how far we can go. Hopefully we’ll welcome a couple of players back and I think we will thrive in 2019, if we continue to work hard.”
