Report: Blackburn Rovers 0 Blues 1

Blues kickstart their Continental Cup campaign with an away win at Blackburn.

A late Claudia Walker goal proved decisive despite a game of many chances for Blues, including hitting the crossbar in the final minutes.

Carla Ward used this game as an opportunity to rotate her squad after 3 games in a week, making eight changes to the matchday squad.

New signing Daniela Kosinska made her debut in place of the injured Hannah Hampton, whilst Heidi Logan made her return to the bench after a long-term injury.

Blues started brightly and created the first opening of the game. Mollie Green picked up the ball on the edge of the box, but her effort went over the bar.

18-year-old Gemma Lawley, making her second start, played an inch perfect ball through the Blackburn defence and found Green. The midfielder turned and shot but it narrowly missed the top corner.

Kosinska started life at Blues well, first playing out of the high Blackburn press to find Harriet Scott, before commanding her penalty area to claim a dangerous free kick from the hosts.

Blues started the second half in similar fashion to the first. Abbi Grant was played through on goal twice with the latter finding the back of the net, only to be ruled offside.

Harriet Scott resumed normal service, making a superb last-ditch challenge to deny a clear opportunity for Aimee Hodgson.

Substitute Claudia Walker had an opportunity to give Blues the lead. She was played through on goal only to be denied by former Blues ‘keeper Alex Brooks.

Five minutes later and Walker had her goal. The striker ran onto a long ball over the top and this time dispatched beyond the diving Brooks to put us ahead.

The hosts almost found an equaliser. Ellie Stewart and Elise Hughes both having efforts cleared off the line.

Ward’s side went straight up the other end in search of a second to kill the game and almost found it. Sarah Mayling’s powerful shot from an angle cannoned back off the bar.

Following the win, Blues now sit top of their group with only Leicester City remaining to play in November.
