Report: Blues Under-23s 1-2 Burnley Under-23s

Blues Under-23s were narrowly beaten by Burnley at Liberty Way on Monday night in the Premier League 2.

The hosts opened the scoring in the first-half when Kieran Wakefield reacted quickest after Oriol Soldevila’s shot was saved.

But two second-half strikes sealed the points for Burnley, as they turned the game on its head against Steve Spooner's team.

It was the away side who enjoyed the first couple of chances early on. Joe McGlynn poked agonisingly wide before Blues captain Mitchell Roberts did superbly to block a Michael Mellon shot in the box.

Blues would grow into the game and had their first effort just short of the 20-minute mark. Caolan Boyd-Munce drove a beautiful cross-field pass into the feet of Soldevila, who skipped past his marker before his shot was wayward of Sam Walker’s goal.

A game of few chances would swing Blues’ way in the 33rd minute. Not for the first time, Soldevila drove at the visitors’ defence before unleashing a vicious shot that was parried by Walker straight into the path of the instinctive Wakefield, who slotted home from five yards out.

Burnley hit the woodwork two minutes shy of half-time when Ben Woods’ left-footed corner rattled the top of the crossbar.

The second-half began quickly, both sides enjoying spells of possession but with few opportunities to report.

However, the Clarets would draw level after 63 minutes. Ne Jai Tucker unleashed a fierce left-footed strike from the edge of the box that left gave Oli Basey little chance in the Blues goal.

Remi Walker and Renedi Masampu combined well down the left midway through the second 45, with the latter pulling an effort over the crossbar as Blues searched to regain the lead.

But 15 minutes before time, Burnley would go in front with what proved to be the winner. Owen Dodgson squared the ball to an in-form Mellon, who tucked away his fifth goal of the campaign.
