REPORT: Blues Women 0 Arsenal Women 1

Birmingham City Women were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Arsenal Women, in manager Marta Tejedor’s first home game.

Katie McCabe's scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal edged past a resilient Blues side, which returned the visitors to the top of the table.

Blues returned to action after six weeks out, making four changes from the defeat against Brighton. Harriet Scott and Meaghan Sargeant reshaped the back four, while Chloe Arthur returned to the middle of the park.

The two teams prepared for battle, with the feisty nature of the tie showing its head two minutes in. Aoife Mannion found her name in the book for a challenge on McCabe, which set the precedent for the first half.

Arsenal started the better and tested goalkeeper Hannah Hampton on several occasion. Just 12 minutes in, she had to tip Vivianne Miedema’s header over the crossbar.

Blues were in danger once again, when a short corner fooled those waiting in the box. Resulting in a goal line scramble, the ball was hit onto the underside of the post, and eventually cleared from danger.

Tejedor’s side’s first real opportunity of the half, came just after the half an hour mark, when Lucy Staniforth picked out Ellen White with a cute pass around to break the defensive line. The striker shot from an angle, forcing a great save out of Pauline Peyrand-Magnin.

Arsenal continued to bang on the door, looking for a way through, but Blues held firm and defended resolutely.

The Gunners’ dominance was matched in the second half, with Hampton being tested throughout. Beth Mead this time had the chance to shoot on goal, but the goalkeeper was equal to it.

The visitors broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time, despite Blues’ best efforts. The midfielder cut in from the right and powered it into the bottom corner beyond Hampton, who had been outstanding to that point.
