REPORT: Blues Women 0 Bristol City Women 0 (1-3 on penalties)

Blues Women edged out a 0-0 draw with Bristol City in the Continental Cup, losing 3-1 on penalties but they progressed through to the quarter-finals.

After the 1-0 loss last Sunday against Manchester City, manager Marc Skinner made three changes in the hope of ending 2018 on a win.

Blues, sitting in second ahead of the game in Group One North, needed a draw to go through as runners-up. Bristol though had to win by five goals to progress through to the quarter-finals.

Neither team looked as if they were going to score in the first half, as the passes were exchanged in the middle of the park. Blues dominated the ball but couldn’t find a way past an organised Bristol back line.

The best chance fell to Connie Scofield, who was given the ball inside the 18-yard box. She weaved her way past the defender and unleashed a shot from a tight angle, which former Blue Sophie Baggaley had to push around the post.

There were two changes in the early stages of the second 45 that seemed to swing the momentum in Blues’ favour. Aoife Mannion and Lucy Quinn were replaced by Emma Follis and Harriet Scott.

Scott should have given Blues the lead, when her long-range effort rippled the side netting as it drew gasps from the crowd.

In the last 10 minutes, it was Scott once again that ventured forwards from right-back and sent a 25-yard shot over the crossbar before it was rattled by Lucy Staniforth’s free-kick.

As the game finished 0-0, due to Continental Cup rules, it went to penalties. Staniforth was the only one to net her penalty, as Wellings, Harrop and Follis were denied. Rutherford netted the winning penalty for Bristol as they won 3-1 on penalties, after Katie Rood and Poppy Pattinson had converted theirs.
