Blues Women fell to a 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Lauren Hemp, Caroline Weir and a double from Sam Mewis secured all three points for the visitors.

City started the game well and created two early chances. First, former Blues striker Ellen White saw her header saved by Hannah Hampton before Steph Houghton climbed from the resulting corner, but again Hampton gathered.

Blues settled into the game and started to create a few openings of their own. Rebecca Holloway whipped in a free-kick to the back post, but it was cleared by City.

Then, Holloway played in a corner that was only half-cleared, Houghton came over the top of Sarah Mayling, but the referee waved away penalty claims.

Late into the half Chloe Kelly advanced down the right-hand side and played in a cross. Mewis stooped low to power a header into the bottom corner.

The visitors came out firing in the second half. Hannah Hampton made a superb diving save to deny Mewis her second, but from the resulting corner, City doubled their lead.

After some pinball in the box, the ball fell the way of the American who fired low and into the back of the net.

A minute later City had their third. Hemp drove down the left and attempted a cross into the box. The ball in was misjudged by Hampton and found its way into the far corner.

Blues almost capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Lucy Bronze and Steph Houghton through Emily Murphy. The striker made space on the edge of the area, but her effort was held by Ellie Roebuck.

City added a fourth through Weir. Ellen White played the ball through and the midfielder got in ahead of Hampton to poke it beyond the keeper.

Blues remained resilient in the closing stages of the game, stopping City from adding a fifth.
