Darren Carter revisits Blues' 2002 play-off glory
To mark the 20-year anniversary of Blues' promotion to the Premiership, Darren Carter returned to Cardiff.
On Sunday 12 May 2002, Birmingham City faced Norwich City in the Nationwide Division One play-off final at the Millenium Stadium on the banks of the River Taff.
After the game was goalless at the end of normal time and 1-1 following 30 minutes of additional action, a penalty shootout was required to determine the winner of a place in the top flight.
As Stern John, Paul Devlin and Stan Lazaridis found the net for Blues, only Iwan Roberts had scored for the Canaries, with Philip Mulryne and Daryl Sutch failing to beat Nico Vaesen.
Despite Clint Easton scoring Norwich's next attempt, all that was left was for 18-year-old Carter to convert and secure the Club a place at English Football's top tier for the first time since 1986.
The young midfielder confidently dispatched his kick beyond Rob Green to spark jubilant scenes between the players, staff and travelling Bluenoses.
Two decades on from the landmark event, Carter (Blues Women's Interim Head Coach) accompanied BluesTV to the now Principality Stadium to turn back time and look back on one of Birmingham's greatest days.
