Report: Burnley Under-23s 1-1 Blues Under-23s

10 January 2022

Blues drew away to Burnley in the Premier League 2 on Monday evening.

Dara Costelloe opened the scoring for the home side in the first-half before the visitors grabbed a deserved equaliser when Jacson Coppack inadvertently put the ball into his own net late on.

In an opening 45 of few opportunities, Blues’ 'keeper Archie Matthews was quick off his line after ten minutes to deny Sean Etaluku at the back post on one of the few occasions the Clarets threatened.

Just shy of the half-hour mark, Blues had their first real chance of the game. After breaking down the right, Josh Williams’ cross-turned-shot found itself at the feet of Kyle Hurst who fired wide from close range.

Confidence was building in the Blues ranks and Remi Walker whipped a free-kick just wide, whilst Blues were happy to see a Ne’Jai Tucker strike flash off-target at the other end.

But the breakthrough would come just four minutes before the interval. Costelloe broke down the left for the Clarets before turning inside Josh Williams and firing across Matthews into the net.

With his team hunting an equaliser in the second-half, Blues Boss Steve Spooner freshened things up on the hour. Owen Humphries, recently at Mangotsfield Town, replaced Keyendrah Simmonds whilst the returning Leo Dos Reis was introduced for Oppong.

And it did not take long for Dos Reis to get into the thick of the action. Shortly after coming on, he saw a flicked header from an Oriol Soldevilla corner cleared off the line. The two Spaniards linked up in a similar fashion shortly after, another Dos Reis header this time being well saved by Burnley keeper Sam Waller.

But the away side would get their leveller five minutes from time. Blues broke down the right through Soldevila, who found a shot saved by Waller before the ball deflected off Coppack and into an empty net to ensure the points were shared.
