Gary Rowett - There's not many better than Clayton Donaldson

I don’t think there are many players in the Championship that can offer the all round game.

Gary Rowett
Last season's top scorer for Blues was back on the goal trail at the weekend as he hit a first-half hat-trick in the 4-2 victory against Bristol City. But even before returning to goalscoring form this season, he was a key supplier of goals.

"It was a really interesting one in the summer with the speculation surrounding Clayton and obviously Demarai," said Rowett.

"But I think with Clayts the biggest thing for me was let’s say we had £2m to replace him, I was really struggling to find anybody that could offer the same sorts of performances and what he would give to the team and that’s a real testament to any player in how do you replace them?

"I don’t think there are many players in the Championship that can offer his all round game in terms of the running, the unselfishness, the aerial ability, the pace, the goal threat and the assists, as we’ve seen this season with four already. I think the biggest compliment to any player is that the other players really appreciate him."

As a former defender himself, Rowett appreciates how difficult it must be to play against Donaldson.

"The one thing he does really well is he runs into space and does it really well," added Rowett.

"He’s a real handful to play against. And it’s not an easy role either. He plays it tirelessly as the lone front man and there’s not many better."
