Gary Rowett on Ryan Shotton loan

He can cover two or three positions across the backline and he’s got some good experience in the Premier League with Stoke

Rowett on Shotton
The versatile 6ft 3in Derby County man signed for Blues last night on a temporary deal until the end of the season.

Shotton can play at right-back, or centre-half if required, and will provide valuable added competition for places at the back.

“Ryan was one that we just felt that we needed – an extra body defensively, someone that can give us something different, certainly in terms of his height, power and athleticism,” said Rowett.

“He gives us different options for different games.

“He can cover two or three positions across the backline and he’s got some good experience in the Premier League with Stoke.

“He fits the mould of someone that hasn’t played that much this season but can handle the Championship, as we know, and might have a bit of added motivation to come and try and get in our team.

“With any player that we bring in, I make it quite clear to them when they walk in through the door that they’ve got to work hard to get into the team.

“The team are going well at the moment. I’ve showed a lot of loyalty to the players and at this moment it’s up to them to try and force their way in with their performances.”

Rowett added:  “You don’t win things with your recruitment in January but it builds your squad up to a point where you can certainly be very competitive.

“It’s up to me now to manage those amounts of players, but we’re really pleased and thankful that the Club are trying to keep us moving in the right direction.

“We had a certain amount of money we wanted to spend on permanent additions and a certain amount for loans.

“You’re trying to be as impactful as you can with everything you’re doing.”
