Blues youngster Luke Maxwell has today joined National League side Gateshead on a three-month loan.

Maxwell links up with the north-east club today in time to be in contention for their home game with Aldershot Town tomorrow.

The 20-year-old knows the top tier of non-league football well, having made his name as an athletic, ball-playing midfielder for Kidderminster Harriers before his £75,000 switch to St. Andrew’s in January 2016.

Maxwell, who played four games during a loan spell at League Two Grimsby Town earlier this year, was used predominantly in a central defensive role for Blues Development Squad last season.

He made 18 competitive appearances for the Under-23s in 2016/17 but has yet to feature this term.

Maxwell has been given permission to play in the FA Cup and FA Trophy for Neil Aspin’s Heed, who currently sit 11th in the National League.

He will remain at the Gateshead International Stadium until 17 December, but can be recalled after 28 days.
