Reaction: Blues 1 Leeds United 0

The ground was jumping, the players fed off that and it gave them the confidence to drive the game forward and not worry about making a mistake. The fans got us that win.

Steve Cotterill gives his thoughts on today's much-deserved victory over high-flying Leeds.

Steve Cotterill’s reaction to today’s game…

There have been a few games where we’ve deserved more than we’ve got. Our last few performances have been very good, even though our last few results have gone against us. We knew it was going to be tight, Leeds are a very good team. It was a tough game for us today but I actually thought we were the better team in both halves and perhaps deserved more than our 1-0 victory today. We definitely deserved to win. Our game plan was to work off of a good defensive shape, that we don’t get counter-attacked, because that can happen a lot in this league. I thought our players were superb today and I am delighted with them and I am delighted for them.

Steve Cotterill on the part the Blues fans played in achieving today’s result…

From the minute I walked out, I felt the fans rose to the challenge against the supporters of a big club like Leeds United and their big away following. We know how passionate their fans can be, but our fans rose to that. The vibe around the ground was magnificent and that transmits to the players. I don’t know if they really know how much they helped them today. I really hope they know that and I want to say a big thank you and well done to all of them. All the work we’ve done on the training ground that’s benefitted us coming into this game, you can’t swap that for how our supporters were today. We always do our homework on the opposition’s strengths and weaknesses and trying to expose them as much as we can. The difference today: the ground was jumping, the players fed off that and it gave them the confidence to drive the game forward and not worry about making a mistake. The fans got us that win. I hope they enjoy their night.

Steve Cotterill on his side finally getting what they deserved from their performance…

When I came in we were second bottom, we’ve gone to the bottom of the table but we’ve played some excellent football in the last five or six games which has probably gone a bit unnoticed because, as we know, the results overshadow that. The amount of times where we’ve been in games and then a slight lapse in concentration has cost us, but sometimes that’s how your team grows, through lots of painful, hurtful times and memories.

Steve Cotterill on giving Harlee Dean the captain’s armband…

Harlee Dean brings good leadership anyway, he’s an excellent professional, a very good footballer – I like that in my centre-backs, if you can get it. For me, he’s been our outstanding performer in our last five games, so it was an easy decision who I was going to give the armband to today. I have given it to David Davis before when I’ve thought he was in good form. I felt I needed to give David a breather a couple of games ago and I didn’t want to heap the pressure back on him again, so I pulled him aside and explained that situation and that it wasn’t a snub towards him.
