Reaction: Blues 2 Bristol City 1

That was a great result for courage, guts and effort. The crowd were fantastic with us, they kept us going. Effort can take you a long way and we had great effort today.

Blues boss Harry Redknapp's thoughts after this afternoon's pulsating win over the Robins...

Harry Redknapp’s overall assessment of the game…

“It was a very hard-earned victory against an excellent Bristol City team. I went to watch them in pre-season against Twente and I came back and said that some of their football was incredible. They’re a good team.

“It’s a team that’s been built over a period of time now and they’ve got strength in depth, they’ve got options everywhere.

“In the first-half I thought they were better than us but we had to hang in there.

“We went 1-0 down after a minute and they looked like Real Madrid or Barcelona, the way they were playing through us.

“Then we came back and had a couple of good chances. But, to be honest with you, I was waiting to get to half-time. If anyone was going to go in front again it was going to be them.

“We changed it a bit at half-time. I went to play three in midfield to try and thicken it up in there, circumstances really.

“Davo (David Davis) had a virus this week so I took him off and Groundsy (Jonathan Grounds) had a bang on his head. A lump came up above his eye and he was struggling to see.

“I could have brought David Cotterill on and gone 4-4-2, like we started the game, but I just felt we’d be too open. We were open in the first-half and they were playing through us, around us, and we couldn’t get near them.

“We made a couple of changes and looked more solid in the second-half and it was a great goal to win the game.

“We were stronger in the second-half. They were overrunning us in the first-half in midfield but we managed to get around them and in the end the lads worked hard and you can’t ask any more than that.

“That was a great result for courage, guts and effort. The crowd were fantastic with us, they kept us going. Effort can take you a long way and we had great effort today.”

Harry Redknapp on Jacques Maghoma’s winning strike…

“Jacques had got good ability. You don’t go to Tottenham as a kid if you haven’t got potential – they’ve got the cream of the kids to pick from.

“I told him afterwards that he looked like John Robertson, the way he came in from the left, but he didn’t have a clue who I was talking about!

“It was a great goal. And he worked hard today. He tracked back and worked up and down.”

Harry Redknapp on the dismissal of Maikel Kieftenbeld…

“I thought it was a diabolical decision. I couldn’t see it at all. I thought it was a yellow card, that’s what he gets and we all play on. That’s not a red card. Terrible.”

Harry Redknapp on injuries and suspensions…

“They’re going to happen. We’re not a young team and if we play three games in a week, we’re going to get injuries at this time of the year.

“We’ve got to be able to rest players, have options. We’ve got no options at the moment. That’s the problem.

“Che (Adams) has done a hamstring. How long’s that going to be? I wouldn’t know. At the moment we’ve only got one striker.

“We’ve just got to get some deals over the line. We’re trying. The owners will do it. They’re ambitious, I’m ambitious.

“I want to see this team up towards the top of the table at the end of the season. You only do that if you’ve got good players and a good squad.”
