Blues will travel to fellow Championship side Reading in the First Round of this coming season's Carabao Cup.

The draw was made in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, this morning.

In contrast to previous years, there was no seeding for the draw, so Blues could have been pitted against any of the other 33 teams in the Southern Section.

It will be the first time that Blues and the Royals have faced each other in the League Cup competition.

A final day win over Fulham saw Garry Monk's team leapfrog Paul Clement's charges in the Championship table to finish 19th last season, with the Berkshire side ending up one place below them.

Blues got 2018 off to a great start with a 2-0 win on Reading turf, Jacques Maghoma and Sam Gallagher scoring. It was Blues first away win of the league campaign, at the 13th time of asking.

The First Round tie at the Madejski Stadium will be played in the week commencing 13 August 2018.

This season's Championship kicks-off on 4 August.

Extra-time has been removed from every round of the Carabao Cup competition, apart from the Final, with matches level at 90 minutes going straight to a penalty shoot-out.

The sequence of penalties will revert to the traditional format, as opposed to the recently trialled ABBA formula, which will no longer feature in EFL competitions.

VAR will again be utilised in the competition and can be incorporated for all games that are played at Premier League stadiums.

This Final will take place on Sunday, 24 February 2019 with the winners guaranteed a place in the Europa League in the following campaign.
